In 1921, Chanel launched a fragrance line that would make history. It is the fifth eau de toilette that perfumer Ernest Beaux presented to her, hence the name: No. 5. Years later, Jacques Polge composed the eau de parfum version. The composition is just as complex, but there are differences.

This eau de parfum version opens with bergamot, peach, ylang-ylang, neroli, and aldehydes. The floral middle consists of iris, lily of the valley, rose, and jasmine. In the warm base, woody notes of vetiver, oakmoss, patchouli, and sandalwood combine with vanilla.
